2012 Health and Wellness Series
Presented by Kingwood Psychotherapy & Assessment Center and Kingwood Christian Church
When the hustle and bustle of the holiday season comes to a close, many of us will be thinking about how to get a fresh start in the New Year. In January, Kingwood Christian Church will launch a lecture series featuring local experts with a focus on fitness, mind, body, and relationships.
“We think a lecture series on wellness topics is a great way to start the New Year,” said Joni Adams, LPC, of Kingwood Psychotherapy & Assessment Center , who recently began a counseling outreach service through the church.
“Kingwood has a great wealth of community resources, and we want to make those available and bring people together. And those who attend will not only walk away with helpful information for their lives, they’ll also be helping to make the counseling ministry of Kingwood Christian Church more available to people who need it, but can’t afford it.”
The series, to be held at the church campus, 3910 West Lake Houston Pkwy, will run at 7 p.m. on Monday nights in January, February, March and April.
The first presentation Jan. 9 is by Leesa Shanahan, owner of Kingwood Nutrition and the Kingwood Weight Loss Challenge. Shanahan, a marathon runner and mother of three, will present “Kingwood Nutrition’s 25 Best Nutrition Secrets for 2012.”
Shanahan has worked as a running coach, and recently began competing in sprint distance triathlons. She and other Kingwood Nutrition coaches have helped hundreds of Kingwood residents lose thousands of pounds in the past few years. “I have fun staying physically active with my family here in the Kingwood area,” she said. “I hope to pass on my passion for wellness to my family and the local community.”
A second presentation, “Exercise – Commit for Life,” will be presented at 7 p.m. Jan 23 by Lisa Kauderer, owner of “Your Best Body” fitness center.
“I will be discussing the fundamentals of exercise, the importance of making exercise a lifetime commitment and then I’ll give a short demonstration of a full-body workout,” said Kauderer, an instructor in the popular Adventure Boot Camp for Women program.
Whether working one-on-one or with a group, Kauderer’s ultimate goal is to help everyone achieve or maintain a healthy lifestyle with her cardio and strength training based programs.
Topics and speakers for February, March and April include:
· Kandi O’Malley and Robert Reynolds on “Whole Health Living – Hatha Yoga and Meditation Practice,” Feb. 6
· Tom Shane, author and Master Chaplain with the International Conference of Police Chaplains, “Helpful Ways of Coping With Stress,” Feb. 27
· Amy Plummer, M.D., "Your Body is a Temple" of Her Healthcare, March 5
· Sarah Meade, nurse practitioner, of Kingwood Psychiatry, March 19
· Margaret Maat of Forward Focus, “Let’s Talk About Love: Building Healthy Relationships,” April 16
· Alysha Roll and MaryBeth George of Counseling & Play Therapy Associates, "The First Step to Building a Sound Relationship: Increasing Friendship and Intimacy," April 30
Donations for the lectures will be accepted (as willing and able). For more information about the lecture series, or the counseling program at Kingwood Christian Church, contact Joni Adams at Kingwood Psychotherapy & Assessment Center, 832-291-6733.
